So, a week with a new Technivorm Moccamaster KBG-741-AO... I finally figured out a good grind on my Magister (cornmeal texture is an apt description), and a good ratio. 5 Tv-scoops to 6 Tv-cups water made for a thoroughly enjoyable cup of decaf this evening. I think I had been using not-enough grounds until now. Mind you, I am an espresso and Aeropress fan, so I expect a smooth, full-bodied coffee using freshly roasted beans. I should be receiving a gram scale tomorrow, so that will help, going forward.
On a related note, I was contemplating selling my old faithful Starbucks Utopia (aka Bodum Santos Electric) vacuum brewer, so cleaned it out with a solution of Joe Glo that I normally use on my espresso machine and various coffee items (1 tbs per quart of hot water for soaking coffee parts in). I knew that it eats through coffee oils quite well. I didn't know it would also eat through the glue that cemented the bottom of the vacuum carafe to the sides... either that, or ten years of accumulated coffee oils in the crevices is all that held it together! It sure looks sparkly clean now. Sad to see it go to the landfill. :-( Brilliant, just brilliant...
As I told my S.O. today... the road to hell is paved with unintended consequences. I just love twisting quotes around, or at least that's what I tell myself.

My new digital scale showed up today - 1KG with precision to the tenth of a gram +/- 0.2gm. Close enough for coffee!
So first thing I did, aside from check accuracy with the specified 500g calibration weight, is check how much of my particular ground coffee the supplied Technivorm measuring spoon holds. It does hold 2 tbs. in volume, but for the output of my grinder, just shy of 8g of coffee. Assuming 60g of coffee per liter, that works out to 7.5 spoons, or 9.4 spoons for the full 1.25 liter capacity. No wonder my coffee was tasting weak following the recommendation in the manual of 5-6 spoons.
Measuring using the little digital scale with a tare function is so easy, that makes much more sense going forward. We Americans are so used to measuring things by volume, but it is far more accurate to measure by mass. It just sounds funny to ask a neighbor if I can borrow 214g of sugar.
