Thanks for the responses. I bought this one because I didn't have one like it and I like the old Wearevers.
I currently use dripolators every time I make coffee - finding out that this one works more like a percolator is disappointing because I don't like perc'd coffee at all. I will still try it to see. If I don't like it, oh well, at least it is another one for the collection.

Hi mellojeff,
It is still a little puzzling. I'm guessing that is an evolution (is mutation a better word) step from the dripolator to the perculator.
I think water goes into the small diameter cylinder and ground coffee goes into the filter basket which surrounds it. When the water boils over it passes through the grounds and into the outer vessel. Since the outer vessel is on the stove I'm guessing it will produce the burned taste of a perc.
In response to the other posts: The article posted is the directions to use a dripolator. Also, the Neapolitan coffee pots are really interesting - one of my friends has one and it makes great coffee.
Thanks again for the discussion - this is a great forum.

I loaned the coffee pot to a friend of mine, and he was able to find the patent, which described the procedure used for brewing coffee. The coffee grinds are placed between the inner and outer mesh cylinders, and water is poured into the center cylinder. We have managed to make decent coffee after a few tries, but I still think the dripolator is better.
Here is a link to the patent, which includes the instructions toward the end of the document. Maybe the original poster will see this at some point... http://ip.com/pdf/patent/US702122.pdf
