When I got my Virtuoso, I started by grinding some Grindz cleaner, and then vacuumed it out and used it like normal after that. No off tastes.

I will look into Grindz. I did not know you could just clean it out like that.

... at $30/lb ... ??

And here I thought you were worried about using $20/lb coffee!

;-)

(pssst... hey buddy! use Minute Rice instead! shhh ... don't tell anyone!)

$30/LB. where did I ever say that unless you meant the Grindz. Anyway, all is OK as I did use the Whole Foods coffee. They say the Grindz will get rid of other things that Minute rice will not. Not sure about this as I have never done either to clean my previous grinder. That old one I will use to grind my wifes flavored coffee! ewwwwwww

Anyway, I used the Encore today and all was well. However, I must need to tap it when done before I remove the bin as some ground coffee kind of got on the counter when I removed the bin.

P.S. Love Loveland. We lived in Arvada and liked that area!

This may be true but it is the first time I have heard that said.  I wonder if he would say the same thing if he would say the same thing if he sold Minute Rice and didn't sell Grindz?

LOL, yeah, Grindz' cost works out to $30/lb! Your original thought of using inexpensive coffee is a better idea, IMO.

I haven't used Grindz, but I have used generic "Minute Rice" to clean my Quick Mill grinder. I can definitely say that the generic "Minute Rice" cleaned the burrs & grind chamber of all coffee oils, so I wouldn't hesitate to use it to clean fabrication oils out of a new grinder.

I don't know what "other things" there might be to clean out of a grinder? The ingredients of Grindz are listed as, "grains (including wheat), cereals and binders," meaning it's been pre-ground & then reformed (compressed) into cute little coffee bean shapes. :-D Thanks, but at $30/lb I'll stick with my $2.49 box of "Minute Rice"!

Ok, so once the rice is ground do you then grind a few tablespoons of coffee and then throw that out? I assume that once the rice is ground, there will be some rice left to get rid of.

Yes, that's exactly right, a tablespoon or two should work just fine. On my Solis 166 grinder (predecessor to the Maestro, but uses a similar burr set with a lift-out top burr) I can easily brush out most of the rice remains & get away with almost no follow-up coffee. The Quick Mill 031 grinder requires a couple of tablespoons of coffee to clear out the rice remains.

Or you can follow the Grindz instructions which state:

Run Grindz Grinder Cleaner through the grinder followed by twice the amount of coffee to be ground next. Grinder will then be ready for use.

Hmmm.... :-/

P.S.,
My wife thinks she wants to move to Portland! :-D I'm a bike-commute fanatic, so maybe that's where we're headed next?

Speaking of wives...mine...the one who makes me grind flavored coffee...wants to know if Brown Rice that you need to cook for 10 minutes is OK, or do I need to get Minute Rice?

Also, how much rice do we use and how often?

I think you would love the Portland area. We are in the west hills. One good thing about this area is that there is a coffee roaster (by law) on every block...next to the yogurt shops!  :-) Not sure what work you are looking for. We lived all over...CT, Fla, Colorado, CA, and now PDX and we like PDX the best. Let me know if/when you are going come here.

No, "regular" rice (white or brown) is harder than you want. Minute Rice is pre-processed in a manner that makes it more "crushable," so to speak. It's this "crushability" (like a roasted coffee bean) that you want in the cleaning material so that it's kind to your burrs but still absorbs the oils on your grinder's internal surfaces.

Use 28g (1oz) per cleaning session. Use as often as you feel is necessary. Opinions will vary. Some people clean their grinders every month. I clean mine about once a year. Some people never do it. :-)

We were planning to visit Portland & Seattle this August, but our plans changed. Now it looks like we won't get the chance until next year. I'm looking for a new electro-mechanical design and/or manufacturing engineering job, but most employers have placed their salary levels too low for the experience they want. But I'm ever-hopeful, & still looking! :-)

OK, 1 oz Minute Rice. I also agree that a few times a year may be all I would do. Good luck on your planned trip next year!
