Well, since I don't think the replacement burrs to these things are available anyway, I decided to glue the conical burr to it's plastic mounting piece to better address Problem 1 listed above. I used a quick-setting 24 hour epoxy. Sweet(!), I got it right and everything is pretty level. It definitely eliminates Problem 1 so the conical burr no longer wobbles back and forth due to play with the plastic mounting piece. However, the metal axle the conical burr slides onto isn't rock solid in the first place. So, the conical burr can still end up being positioned a little unevenly. A good way to address this issue would be to buy a different grinder in the first place. =-) The Orphan Espresso LIDO looks like a mighty fine choice.
I am still looking for the perfect spring to replace the factory one and provide greater tension. I can imagine that perhaps a tenser spring will not improve the situation given that the axel positions the conical burr a little unevenly, but I will try it out.
