Can you get a robust brew from this machine?  I know that brewing is supposed to be hot and fast but that is what my Bunn does but it results in weak coffee using our drip grind, 10 grams/ 5 oz water.

Our old Mr. Coffee using the same ratio gives a nice strong coffee.

thx

Yes you can.

Also, welcome to CoffeeGeek   : )

I chew coffee beans with my teeth while gargling with 195 F water to enjoy coffee. What is this "coffee brewing" device you speak of?

Bob,  your brew ratio should give you adequate strength for most drip brewers.  I would first address your grind and see if you can get a better result.  If it is tasting too weak, try a finer grind.  There really is no magic grind size that is appropriate for all brewers, so what might work well on one may not work well on another.  If your Mr. Coffee has a cone style filter, and the Bunn has a flat bottom, I would bet addressing your grind would likely make a night and day difference.

Thanks, Keith

Maybe the problem is that we only brew 20-25 oz batches in all machines. Also we have been using pre-ground SB's House Blend since our new Cuisinart burr grinder produces way too many fines and doesn't seem consistent.  I tried the restrictor spray head that Bunn sent this morning and it was a lot better but still weaker than old mr. coffee!

bob

ps: Mr coffee is flat bottom, too

You are welcome Bob.  Since you are buying pre-ground, I would suggest you not buy another brewer but buy a good quality grinder instead.  For the money, the Baratza Encore is hard to beat for drip use.  They are by far our best selling grinder for that reason.

Is the Cuisinart as bad as I think? Thought it had good reviews for a ceramic burr, sub $100 grinder?

thx

They make a conical burr grinder (metal burrs though, not ceramic) that isn't too bad but I can't see where to find replacement a burr set for mine. Baratza provides this important replacement item for every grinder in it's line along with very decent customer service and technical advice if needed.

I recently purchased this with the thermal carafe.  Anyone know of any recent glass carafes imploding, or has Bonavita fixed the design?

Check out the last 2-3 pages of the thread titled Bonavita bv1800th (thermal carafe) 4 down from this current thread. I've had no trouble with my thermal carafe, had since Nov 2012. I don't know of, nor have heard of any changes Bonavita has made to the carafe.
