I am devoted to French Press coffee. Though I own a few other devices, French Press is tops. I've had a few burr grinders...mostly in the $100 range...none have been very good. If there was a favorite, it was a Starbucks Barista (A re-branded Saeco I think).
My question: At what level (specific recommendations appreciated) does one begin to get a really regular french press grind? I'm not going to spring for a Rancilio Rocky, but still want something that will deliver. Espresso is not my thing...when I want a good shot I go to a good cafe.

I gather then that "I'm not going to spring for a Rocky" means "I'm not spending $300", correct?
Baratza Virtuoso, $200 new (I got a refurb for $140, it looks brand new). It's a noticeable improvement in consistent grind over the $100 burr grinders. The thing I like about Baratza is the ready availability of parts and excellent customer service, so consider it a long-term purchase.

I found a mazzer super jolly on craigslist for 175$. I have been amazed with the french press that it makes. Very little sludge. It is better than the sbucks barista grinder I used to have, better than the b. Vario I had and better than the zass.

This was a great deal for you, but the OP might want to drink some press coffee before the year 2020 so waiting for another $175 SJ is not realistic - most used ones sell for more than the cost of a new Rocky (which is over the OP's limit). The Virtuoso does a good job with press (first hand experience). The Virtuoso Preciso (no personal experience) has been reported to be even better according to a report from the founder of this site.
Chris Coffee has a buyer's remorse Preciso listed right now for $230 - never bought from them but their reputation is very strong as is Baratza's.
