I am interested in using a ceramic (or glass) filter basket for my TV to eliminate the only piece of plastic in the post boiler brew process.  I have seen two on amazon that look like they would work, but was hoping for feedback from people who are currently doing this in the CG community.  So, I know you are out there - what are you using?

I have seen it done with the Hario V60.
I don't understand though, doesn't it defeat the purpose of 300 dollar coffee maker when you can heat the water and pour it into a airpot or thermal carafe yourself?

Not really - all the basket does is hold the filter (and hold coffee oils which are impossible to fully clean out of plastic).  The $300 allows water to be heater to the correct temperature without having to fool with a kettle and very lightly apply that water to the grinds.  There is nothing special about the stock basket unless you make partial pots and want to regulate water flow with the valve.  I only make full pots so this is not useful to me.

I also have a chemex and press and love the chemex, however after walking a dog in the dark at 5am the last thing my brain is capable of doing is regulating water flow and temp over the chemex while getting dressed for work :)

Ah. Well stated!
Standing around for making press pot coffee isn't exactly my favorite thing some mornings, either.

I am always interested in discovering ways that might improve my coffee, and since I also have a TV I would much like to see what you were looking at over at Amazon. Could you provide a link or two?

Frieling Cilio
HIC

The Frieling looks like it would be lighter - I just need to check the height for clearance under the shower arm.  I am not expecting the coffee to necessarily be a better cup, but it has always bugged me that you can never get that coffee smell out of plastic - it has to taint the cup to some extent.  Even a soak in Joeglo or cafiza leaves a smell.

Just because the plastic smells like coffee doesn't mean the coffee smells like plastic . . .

Is that like a square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn't necessarily a square thing?

Let us know what you come up with, JK. Sounds like a cool option.

I often rotate the basket during the brew for better saturation -- I wonder how mobile a ceramic basket would be (assuming it fits in the tray).

This thread had provoked a thought on the possibility that the plastic may have an effect on the way your brew tastes, so I, too started looking over at Amazon. The Frieling does have its protractors, that's for sure, and a minor feud between two of the reviewers comparing it to a slightly cheaper ceramic cone filter holder — forget the brand name— actually got me to LOL.

As for the height issue, I think it's clear from the photos that one Freiling reviewer provided that there really isn't a height issue. As can be seen on the one with the Frieling resting atop his carafe with paper filter inserted, the Frieling might actually be a small fraction of an inch shorter than the original device coming with the TV.

Laziness often getting the better of me, I often substitute my Melitta Ready, Set, Joe for the TV's larger cone filter holder. It does the job as expected and, therefore, justifies the expenditure for it and the #2 filters to my spouse. The Frieling, thus, should serve this purpose, even though it might be discovered that there is no difference in taste.

One thing, though, the ceramic may well hold the heat sufficiently better than the plastic and provide a hotter cup of coffee. I will confess that while the water coming from the TV's heating element is within the correct range, the coffee cools too quickly for me. It might even benefit the user to heat up that ceramic piece prior to use. I have the glass carafe version, and note that during the brewing process the plate is only beginning to warm up. And as an aside to those negating on this version, claiming that it cooks the coffee, my experience has shown me that the coffee is gone before it can actually begin cooking.
