Hi all!

I'm back with another question on filters. You had kindly informed me about the Silex Lox-in filter which I'm currently trying to buy.  My Silex pot has arrived from e-bay and I'm wondering if I could cobble together a temporary filter just to try it out until I get the real thing.  If I started with  a ring of the right size to fit in the depression of the top pot, and covered it with t-shirt material, would that likely work?

As I've said before, I've never actually seen a vacuum pot in action, so I'm sorry if my questions are too terribly basic  ;)

All your help has been greatly appreciated!

toppity,

My cloth filter is currently a double layer of T-shirt material. I haven't had any of the "official" material so I can't compare for you, however the T works fine. As to how you would keep the filter in place until the down draw begins I'm not sure. Cory uses weight and Silex used springs so you may be able to use weight. As long as you don't do something that breaks the pot what do you have to loose except a pots worth of coffee and some time? Good luck!

btw are you bidding on one on the bay? if so I will cease

Thank you - I just finished trying it with no coffee (and no filter, obviously).  Pretty exciting - I kept finding myself backing away ;)  -- especially immediately after the water was just below the cylinder as there were pretty big galumphs of water moving around.

I'll give it a try with some faux filters and see what I get.

(Yes it's probably me on ebay - I'm high bidder for the moment, I think.  But if you need the filter, just tell me - you were bidding first.  I'm as new to e-bay as I am to vacuum coffee!)

btw: If your not lucky on the first one there is a second one listed as a Sunbeam filter witch oddly looks just like a Silex glass filter rod....spring and all.

Thanks, I'll keep trying!

I tested the pot w/o filter and it worked perfectly.  Then I cobbled together a filter, and managed a decent pot of coffee!  However, the coffee just kind of leaked back into the bottom pot (perhaps this is the "stall" referred to?), leaving a fair bit of coffee in the top.  Now when I try it w/o filter, I still don't get the big "vacuum suck" that takes all the liquid into the bottom pot.  Perhaps I'm having trouble getting it seated properly or a gasket problem?  Any thoughts?

Certainly an interesting exercise!

Success!  I tried dampening the outside of the gasket before inserting it into the bottom pot - got a nice "southward" movement of the finished product.  Now the only problem will be how I'm ever going to get to sleep with all this coffee tasting!

Bingo.   Good for you.

Once you go vacpot, there is no turning back.
