Hi,
I'm looking at trying out a vacuum coffee maker. I noticed an old Silex model on e-bay, but it doesn't have a filter. Is it possible to buy filters separately that would fit? I've seen references to glass filters that sell for approx $45.00. Are these universal? As you can tell from my post, I'm just starting out in this quest for information ;)
I've read the FAQ on vacuum brewers on this site, but I'm still unclear. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Silex use a unique filter. I wouldn't go for a Cory but instead, pick up the spring loaded base one. You can pick one up on eBay, intermittently, for $10-$15 http://www.baharris.org/coffee/Filters/SilexLoxIn.jpg If you can't find one, drop me a note off-line at my profiled email.

A Silex rod went for $10.50 this afternoon on eBay. It is the only one I have seen in the last few weeks and the only reason it is not being shipped towards my house is that I was rollerskating with my daughter(just kidding, actually I'm saving my allowance for a hat). I have a Cory rod which I just got and works fine with my Silex though I know that Silex seems to have put the spring on all of it's filters. It has been said that the Yama, Hario, Kono cloth filters work as well. I haven't seen fit to try them yet as I have the stock ceramic filter holder and now the Cory rod. If you don't hit BoldJava up for an original I may....good luck and happy sipping.

Ditto on that. I have an old Silex. The cory rod is not a fit. The Silex, at least the one I have, used a cloth filter.

Ah yes, I have the wide throat Silex not the narrow throat like CRC which probably makes quite a difference.
The above filter you reference is what I have for my Silex. I think I have one of the older models. I have never used it, I need the upper chamber cover.

Yep, the Lox-in (not to be confused with a hotel that serves smoked salmon) fits both my Nicro stainless and Cory...and my Yama 8 cupper perfectly. You'd think the tightness of the spring would somehow inhibit water movement, but not at all.
