How fine do you need to grind the beans for Moka Put?  Which budget grinder (under $100) can get the job done?  Thanks!

I used a Braun blade grinder (KSM2?) for nearly twenty years with great results by relying on counting to the same number during grinding.  I've seen them as low as $10-$15, new.

For the past two years I've been using my Starbucks Barista (Solis 166, Dualit, & other names) with equal success.  I've seen them as low as $70-$80.

I use a reasonably fine grind, but you may choose a different fineness.  The way I dialed in my grind was to try different degrees of fineness (by counting) & use something a little more coarse (one less counted number) than what would choke the pot.  Once I found that "setting," I simply counted to the same number & got the same grind every time.

How do you explore the "choke" point safely without making a mess?

Is it always one step coarser than the "choke" point will give you the best tasting coffee?

On my (approximately 10 yr old) Alfa stainless moka pot, what I'd call the "choke point" is where small gasps of steam would escape from both the pressure valve & sealing gasket while brewing ver-r-r-ry slowly.  IIRC, I'd keep the Braun blade grinder whirling for a count of about 11 or 12.  Less than a 10 count & the grind was fairly uneven.  Greater than a 13 count & it took forever to brew.

To be honest, I never experimented with grind size vs brew time for taste variations.  I simply didn't know enough about it to even try.  And since I bought my Quick Mill 0930, I've packed up my Alfa & haven't made any Moka.  But I'd be very interested to hear the results of any trials you do with yours!
