Subject: Hand Grinders

I looked through some of the old er threads and saw recommendations for an American-made grinder from WA, Camano.

What do people think about the quality of hand ground coffee out of hand grinders?

Could I get a consistent espresso grind?

Is there a grinder that is truly great?

Thanks,
Ryan

i'm using an older west german mocca grinder for drip and french press.  it works so much better that my old blade grinder and a capresso 557 that i bought and returned because of dust and uneven grind.  on home-barista.com there is a thread on using hand grinders for espresso.  i'm the only coffee drinker in my house and the hand grinder works well for me.

I have a Peugot grinding that I really like -- I compared it to a bottom of the line KitchenAid burr grinder and there was no comparison in terms of grind consistency -- the Peugot won easily.  The only downside of course is that it takes me 90 seconds to grind what an electric grinder can do in 10 or less.  The reason I bought the Peugeot is that at the time the Zassenhaus had been discontinued.

I hear conflicting accounts about the suitability of hand grinders for espresso.  You could get a Zass. Turkinsh Grinder (the brass one) for espresso I think for $100... or you could just suck it up and get a Rocky for 3 billls and change ($320 to be exact).
