Its really the only sensible way to go for a big party. The vast majority of people will not really care one way or the other, mind you, unless you are serving exclusively to coffeegeeks?
Serve it with Half & Half, sugar, and splenda on the side, and people will have no issues.
Just being sensible. Serving a big crowd is onerous enough without having to burn yourself out over how the coffee is prepared.

Very true .. I have a Delonghi coffee urn .. it works very well .. the coffee is better then what most people at my parties are drinking at there homes .. it can out class drip anyday .. and competes with the french press .. so unless you have gurus coming to the house expecting espresso it will be just fine.
Just use good fresh coffee and a good grinder .. dose away .. don't jip people .. give ehm coffee.
Perhaps all coffee urns are not created equal .. I am happy to use mine when the big crowds show up .. it gives the espresso folks more elbow room at the espresso bar ! In fact I may get a second one someday.

I host private parties for groups of 50 - 100 people several times a year with a commercial Bunn VPR drip maker and thermal carafes for the morning coffee. Total cost under $200 (used)..well worth it.

Large thermal carafes are the key. I have a few that I got at Sam's Club a couple of years ago. Look similar to others I've seen from other vendors. These are fantastic - glass vacuum bottles inside, stainless steel exterior, pump handle on top and very easy to clean as it all disassembles nicely. Also - these will hold the heat for hours - far longer than needed for a typical party.
Point is: I can use a good drip maker, fill 4 or 5 of these thermal air pots long before people are ready to drink coffee, and then treat my guests to real drip coffee at a good temperature when they're ready.
I used to use a gigantic Farberware percolator, but it was just that - a percolator. At this point, having learned to make REAL coffee, I cringe to think of what I used to make. Earlier posts in the thread may be right - perhaps with enough creamer and sweetener, it will be better than what people usually drink. But I can no longer imagine the concept of "perking" coffee, with already-brewed coffee going BACK into the heading element to be boiled again and dripped repeatedly through the grounds. There's something almost sinister about doing this...
