I know this is a little off topic, but I want to buy a coffee maker from Zaccardi's. Has anyone ever dealt with them? I've read mixed reviews on them, so thought I'd see if any of you CG'ers have bought from them.
Yes, I purchased an item from them. I actually contacted them on the phone (about 3 years ago) and they informed me the item I wanted was at their store (it was the top of the line Zassenhaus, the $130 model). Since I live in Connecticut, my wife and I drove to their store in New York. It was a bit of a drive, but I was enthused to get the Zass and that nullified the kind of crappy drive down.
In any event, we got to their store and the owner said he did not have that model in stock. He blamed the miscommunication on one of the employees.
In any event, I ended up purchasing a floor model of the regular Zass for about $40. He gave me a bit off due to such.
All in all, I was not happy about the whole matter. I was specific in what I wanted, and to drive all the way down to hear that it was never in stock was a real bummer.
What I will add is that they were in the process of moving to a new store. Whether or not that factors into the equation here I will leave it to you.

Five weeks before before Thanksgiving I decided to purchase an Eva Solo based on the glowing review on this site. An internet search brought me to Zaccardi's, and I ordered it online. My credit card was immediately debited (which I found out later). Not receiving any email from them after ten days, I decided to call customer service. They informed me that they would email the warehouse and I would receive word shortly. Four more days and no response. I followed-up and again they said they emailed their warehouse, and I should hear from them shortly (deja vu or broken record?). A few days later I followed-up again and am advised that it "looks like it is being drop-shipped from the distributor." This time I do receive an email that the order is being processed. Just after Thanksgiving I called to cancel my order as I felt I was extraordinarily patient. Had to call again to receive a credit on my credit card.
The entire tone of communication was at all times conducted civilly and professionally, but I was sorely disappointed.

By the way, they no longer have an actual storefront that is open to the public. They still have an office/warehouse in Scarsdale, NY where you can pick items up that were ordered over the net or by phone, but it is not set up for walk-in traffic, nor can it be reached directly through the customer service call center. Not realizing this, I actually showed up at their location unannounced. The two women running the place were kind of surprised, since they don't get or encourage walk-in traffic, but they treated me very nicely. I bought an Aeropress and a thermal carafe with no problem.
Just because it happened to you doesn't make it interesting.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.
