I've had my Technivorm Moccamaster Therm for about a year now and I've never descaled it. I'm not really sure that it needs it, as the performance hasn't changed noticably, but I'm thinking that I should probably do it anyway.
I picked up a bottle of Durgol Express at Sur La Table last night, but before I use it I wanted to see if anyone has used it or knows if it's safe for my machine. The lable says it's 15% amidosulfonic acid, and to mix with equal parts water and run through one cycle followed by a couple of clean water cycles.

I've never used (or heard of) Durgol Express, but a search of amidosulfonic acid turned up some MSDS info. I didn't see anything that specifically mentioned reactivity with copper, although one sheet mentioned its use for "cleaning metals and ceramics," & "rust removal agent in air conditioner and cooling system." I wouldn't use it in anything I was going to prepare food/drink with unless I was absolutely sure I could wash/rinse it all clean. Since I can't get inside my TV's boiler, I wouldn't use it on my machine. White vinegar is commonly considered a "safe" demineralizing agent. IIRC, the TV manual says to use 25% white vinegar & 75% water to descale the copper boiling element. Is that an option for you?

I use the Urnex Dezscal descaler (got it from Sweet Marias) on my Technivorm. I find that the quality of my coffee goes up dramatically after I descale, but I'd assume that the need for descaling is really a function of what your local water is like.
