Here's my mod. I sawed off the ring, but left the center post. Couldn't find my hacksaw, so I made do with a spare blade for it, a file, and some steel wool.
Although test grinds of a full hopper have so far not indicated a problem with bean pack interrupting flow to the auger, I figure leaving the center post will help in the case that a pack might do that. Beans don't hang up on it, and retaining it does provide a margin of safety against usage by the geninuinely bozofied. ;-)

Very nice! It looks like you where able to keep it so that the the hopper can still be held in place properly. Is that the case? I'd try this approach but I don't want to mess-up my warranty. I wonder if I can order a spare fingerguard from kitchenaid?
Sorry your not happy with your KA, but I've found your comments and insights very interesting. First chance I get I'm going to take mine apart and examine it with your comments on the burr assembly and tabs in mind.

I'm thinking of cutting the ring out, leaving a quarter inch either side of the posts to secure the hopper ring thing. But I don't really have a compelling reason to do that just now; this works well.

I'll be content with it now that (a) I've resolved that it won't be worth a ding for alternating various origins for serving customers at the market. Lowered expectations yields tranquility. Yes, I've stopped hopping up and down like a mad imp. For the market (on hiatus till the spring, after a darned windy finish on Saturday) I'll continue to do my 2.5 second purges with the SMP, whose vices now seem virtues and (b) I've found a good home for the KAP at our church, where I've recently made good on my threats to take over the kitchen from the gals with their Folgers percolators. ;-) The KAP will do very well there, where its capacity is just right for the 2 gallon Luxus containers I'm using, and the fairly weak strength preferred by this crew. I don't mind manually cleaning after such large batches -- and really, the retention between the two different coffees I grind is not an issue.
Even so, I'm still going to do some further mods on this thing, as time permits. The first thing will be to grind off the last 5/16" of the auger blade, measuring axially. A bean always seems to get stuck there. Ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as my spelling "geninuinely" -- probably proving that I, too, am among the "bozofied". ;-)
