Posted Wed Dec 18, 2013, 7:22am Subject: Finally! A use for my hair dryer: cooling.
I used to have hair. I no longer have hair. This has not, however, dissuaded me from hanging on to a hair dryer thatís gone unused for well over ten years.
Last night, I had an idea that worked really well to cool some roasted beans. I did a batch in the ol' Nesco, then dumped the beans straight from the drum into an over-sized colander and put the dryer on the cool setting and went to town. They were room temp in under two minutes! I suddenly feel less ridiculous for hanging on to an unjustifiable hair dryer.
Today I'll use the Behmor. When cooling starts, I'll open the door, carefully remove the chaff tray, then go to town again with the blow dryer on cool. Yes, chaff will fly, but my hand-held vac does an amazing job with cleanup.
I've seen all kinds of contraptions for cooling and have felt inadequate. And they're probably more indicated for larger roast sizes. But for my 1/4 and 1/2 lb roasts, the colander and cool blow dryer can't be beat for effectiveness, ease, and cost.
