I was bored the other day and decided to read the instruction manual for my roaster (2 years later :D). Turns out you can adjust the drum position quite easily, 2 min job, amazing eh?
Seeing as I kept getting green beans falling through from the drum into the cooling tray I thought I might as well have a try. I did it. It was easy and yes I now have NO greens dropping out, and there are NO half burnt/half raw beans in the finished batch.
Ok so that was what I expected to happen. What I didn't expect to happen was...
1) A 40% INCREASE IN FUEL EFFICIENCY!!!! 2) A SAMPLE SPOON THAT WORKS! 3) ROAST PROFILES THAT MAKE SENSE!
There must have been soo much heat loss through the gap, I can't believe the effect this has had. Previous settings were getting FC at 10mins and after drum adjustment, the same roast was 6min FC!
Before my roasts were FC at around 200c, I couldnt work out why, the coffee was still very good but I didn't understand why everyone else was getting fc @ around 185c.
So, there you have it. Adjust your drum clearance :)
