I was wondering if anyone has ventured into a commercial roasting business using a BBQ grill system? I would think that such a setup would work well at farmer markets. If anyone is doing this, how did you deal with health dept. regulations? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you're doing a Starbucks-style roast, where you don't care so much about developing the nuances in each coffee, why not? This seems like the best way to roast pounds and pounds of "okay" coffee without investing in a $12k shop roaster.

I think you have to get licensed as a retail food establishment. Your setup would need to be inspected and be in compliance with the local food preparation laws. (? Health department, Fire safety approval, Packaging laws,business license) A commercial address may be required though I remember something about somebody building a roaster room into their garage.

Here in Cali, I actually did go through the process of getting involved in a local farmers market. The business did pan out, but I do understand what you need to do. Assuming you have a business tax permit, the next step is to contact the leadership of the farmers market. As far as regulations go, the farmers market takes care of most of that, but you may still be inspected. Best thing to do is contact the organizer of the FM you want to sell at, and see if there is room for you and also they will let you know what will be expected of you for the particular venue.
