The only thing you missed from Mark's and SM's popping instructions is the initial load which is NOT by weight. The initial load is determined not by weight, but by rotation. Start the popper then add beans until the rotation has almost stopped, or has barely stopped. Then run a couple roasts out to full 2nd crack (rice crispies). 1C should happen about 3-4 min in (definite "pop), then a couple minutes of NO cracking, and then finally a few isolated 2C's followed by full 2C (rice crispies fine crinkle/crackle).
This is to make sure that your times are right, that 2C is actually happening later, and that you know the difference. Don't worry about the roasts at all, you're just establishing the proper load and times. If the times are much shorter, say 2C in 4 - 5 min, you can lengthen the roast by reducing the initial load. You can try perhaps a 1/2 tsp. less and try again, and repeat until you get good times.
BTW all poppers should have the thermostat disabled (easy) as they are very undependable and often prevent 2C from happening, or happening way too late (eg 15 minutes). Be sure you run your test batches until you DO get full 2C.
