Hey all, I picked up one of Len's CRC all stainless 2lb. perforated stainless steel coffee roaster last weekend from a guy on Ebay. What nice piece of work! I did my inaugural roast tonight to break it in. Wasn't too concerned with the results, but the sequence of events surprised me. I had previously been roasting with a homemade contraption involving a cordless drill, a zip tie, a metal dowel, and an unused quart paint can that i fabbed out with internal fins and drilled about a hundred holes in it. You can youtube it if you just search for "houheightskid". Got great results from that little guy, but could only roast 10 oz at a time. So I upped my game!
Here's how tonights roast went. I use a Weber Genesis Silver grill and use the stock thermometer (for now).
1# Guatemala beans Took the temp up to 500-525 (with all three burners on...took a while to juice up to +500 for some reason. Must be the additional absorbtion of the roaster?) First crack came at about 8 minutes. Very surprised Second crack came at about 12+ minutes.
My previous contraption took about 14 min for first and then 17 min + for second.
My thoughts on this:
This roasting drum has much more airflow, reducing the roasting time
Middle burner on the entire time, more direct heat under the beans
Anyone out there have some roasting profiles for this type of roaster, 2lb capacity?
I would be interested in 1# and 2# roasting profiles....your method of what works.
I will continue to play around, but very much loving this already!

Hey Mike glad to hear you are enjoying the roaster!
Your times are comparable to my hottop times maybe just a bit faster. I shoot for 9 minute first crack and pull my roast around 12 minutes adjusting the heat to achieve my desired roast level. I personally think 14 minutes to first crack is too long and you were probably losing some of the beans potential roasting that slow. I think you will be pleasantly surprised in a couple of days when you try these beans.

Espresso: gaggia baby twin, mini... Grinder: fiorenzato pietro 63mm,... Roaster: weber grill with rk drum

For 1 pound in my RK drum, I don't get over 475 on a Weber 3 burner grill - 36000 btu. I get to 475 and then load the drum in the grill. Then to control temp, i usually have to turn the middle burner to low after about 5 minutes and then even have to turn the front to medium low. At first crack, I definitely turn the front to low and sometimes even have to lower the rear burner some to stretch the roast out. With this profile, I can hold off first crack to about 9 to 10 minutes and get 3 minutes after 1st without going into 2nd. For espresso, I like to get 4 minutes post 1st crack. Sometimes I win sometimes I lose. This time of year, my temperatures are a little off due to the cold weather.

Thanks Robert....this is going to be fun. Take a look at my old contraption on youtube....and you will see the origins! What's the capacity of your hottop?
