About 15 years ago a coffee roaster/ bagle shop opened in my town. About 5 years later the owner sold his business and the new owners never toughed the Diedrich IR-5 roaster again. The shop just sold to a couple starting a Mexican Bakery and I went in today to ask if they plan to use the roaster. They said we just want to get rid of it so we can use the space. I asked them how much they wanted and they have no idea what it's worth but they said they would sell it and the large afterburner for about $5,000. My impression is that that is a very good price. I've considered starting a small roasting business before but have never roasted before. I was thinking if I bought it and it didn't work out I could sell it for more than I bought it for but it is very hard to find out what equipment like this goes for used. Is this a good deal like I am thinking? Here is a link to the roaster click here Right now I just doing my first thoughts on the idea and I will need to decide if I am serious about this or not. You should give Diedrich a call and see how much a new one plus afterburner cost. Be up front and say that you are looking at a used one and inquire as to what you should look for regarding issues that may have developed from it sitting for a 10 years; also other issues that may need to be addressed due to its age. That would be a good starting point I believe.

Thanks, that's a good suggestion. As I know very little about roasters at this point it is hard for me to tell but the roaster appears to have been cleaned well and it is in a public area so it looks like you could start it right up. It is still hooked up so I could sart it up and I'm sure they would even let me do a roast to test it. I'll give Diedrich a call later today but am wondering if anyone here has dealt with them before and if they are pretty good about things like Len suggested. I just like to know what to expect. Also, assuming the roaster works well and there are no major repairs needed is the price good?

long time sitting with no use? even in a retail shop I'd still be "MMMMuhmmmm spiders! Yummy..." If you do go to the point of wanting to op test it; spend a goodly amount of time in the machine with the plug off the power :) (...jus my two coppers mate...)

Diedrich roasters are very well built and should last a very long time properly maintained. If not maintained or in need of attention it should be no problem to get what is needed, if not doing the work yourself it may be tricky to find someone to do it for you. Len's advice on getting in touch with Diedrich is a good idea, they are good people and would be helpful in helping with a value and for parts that may be needed.
A IR-5 is about $17,500 and then there are some options. No idea what afterburners sell for nor if they have a different life span then a roaster. I personally would have a good serious look at the machine but would expect it needs some fixing up to be able to sell, if the right price can be negotiated then great. Do understand the machine is close to 1000lbs so ...
