I would love to get some help from you guys! I'm writing my master thesis on coffee roasting, more precise making the ultimate roaster for home use. But what is the ultimate home-roaster!? What do YOU want it to have? Remember to send citation for your paper! By the by, how is your hand built roaster working for you? Will this paper focus more on the market, or toward definition of design considerations of home roasting equipment going forward?

The main focus will be on improving the machine, but in order to understand what people would like I made this survey.
As of today, the machine works actually very good, but not good enough for perfection.

Why do you prefer a fluidbedroaster? Looks good. >snip<x] 1) Always roast light for drip. 2) Total cost was 512 USD. 3) Runs on 120 VAC. 4) Built from 99.5% re-purposed parts. 5) Glass RC. 6) Only clean every 3 months. 7) Very simple chaff control.

If you are doing a Master's Thesis on the "Ultimate Home Roaster", I'd have to assume that the roaster: A. Provides automated controls that create a reliable, repeatable roast for the beginner from some simple settings (such as darkness of roast) and allows more detailed control as the beginner gains experience. B. Is affordable and easily self-maintained (including cleaning) C. Includes safety features to protect against burns and fires. D. Has effective chaff collection. E. Incorporates an effective cooling mechanism. F. Has a small footprint. Most of the cost and complexity will be in the control system. The cost can be limited by providing software that will run on the user's own computer or tablet, providing graphic controls and roast tracking. I would strongly recommend that you obtain a copy of Michael Sivetz's book, Coffee Technology, to guide your research. JB

Would you say that there is a significant difference in the development of flavors between drum roasters and fluid beds?

Thank you for the book tip, found it at my University library. A: Consistency and quality of the roast will be of the major focuses in this thesis. B: Affordable; depends on who you ask. Easy maintenance is crucial C: Yes, needs to pass all official requirements D: Of course, and easy to clean/empty E: Effective cooling with vent pipe F: energy efficient at least. The control system is a tricky one!

IF I understand correctly:
1) A master roaster is first of all a 'cupper'.
2) He uses a drum roaster with a 'trier'.
3) He uses the 'trier' to check 'roast development by 'smell'
4) He then develops a profile using time and temperature to program his PLC (or whatever).

With my old roaster (modified Z&D) I had to roast by BMT because it was too loud to hear the 'cracks'.
I can easily hear the 'cracks' with my new (18 months old) roaster. I have three controls that effect time and temperature. I adjust each one manually with an eye on the BMT and a stopwatch, and an ear on the RC. I do not need or want a PC, PLC, or SBC to roast coffee. A 'smell-o-meter' might be nice though.

For roaster design the first question is; What is the desired batch size? Next question is; How much will it cost?
