We may have different heaters. I find I need 9.5A (1150W) for a 12 minute roast with 170g. That seems like a lot more than anyone else uses, so I'm starting to think the latest heater change started very recently (Sept 2012?).
For back to back roasts, the only option is to open the bean entry trap door. After all, the flow is cut off completely by the bean tray wall if you are cooling down a previous roast. I'm not in such a rush. I usually roast single batches so I use the min fan method during drying.

Yeah its nice to not be in a hurry. I find my time roasting is kinda zen like. I usually pre weigh all the beans I'm going to roast in some mason jars and then I just sit back and roast. I bought my roaster about a month before you and I took it half way apart yesterday and both heaters glow the same. I can do about a 9 min roast with 170g but usually I'll do about a 11-13 min roast. I'll usually do about a 5 min dry and then crank the heat and I'll go to 9.5 on a regular basis to get to 1C as fast as I can and so far I haven't had any scorched beans or roasty flavors. So far the roaster and beans have been able to take everything I can dish out @ it. I don't like dark roasts though so I haven't really gone down that alley.

OK. I guess that confirms it. If your 2 heaters glow the same brightness, it's definitely not the same as mine. Just curious, what's the watts rating on the side of your machine? Mine says 1050W.

Hmmmm. Am I some kind of guinea pig or does anyone else in the world own one of these weird Quests with different heaters? I'm starting to wonder again of its simply broken.
If nobody else shows up, I may need to write to Mr.Yen again.

you could even send an inquiry to coffee shrub and ask if any of there other new one's have different heaters like yours. Hope you can figure it out :)
It's a good question. I'm just a little reluctant to do the swap. I don't want to damage anything accidently (if it is correct), and it's a rather tight space geting to the bolts and wires.
I'm waiting for an answer from CoffeeShrub and I'll take it from there.
No word from CoffeeShrub. (It's no surprise since I didn't buy it there). Besides, they likely still have older stock and have not seen the latest design changes yet.
Molly from Quest was quite clear that the left side heater is a new higher power heater and was added to even out heat since the beans collect on the left hand side. Not much point in me asking again since she'll likely just repeat. Guess I'll just have to wait for someone else to get a newer Quest so I can compare notes.
I still wonder what the durability will be like of the new hotter heater. Not that these questions aren't stopping me from putting out some pretty fine roasts!
