I just had a bread maker given to me that I want to use to roast with. I have been doing the bowl and heat gun. Are the people that are using this method finding they need to remove the thermostat? Also how much can you reasonably roast at a time? It is a 2 pound bread maker. I am hoping to be able to roast a pound at a time.

I also have a two pound bread machine and an old Milwaukee heat gun. I am only on about my 10th roast. I found that with less than a pound the beans get tossed out too much. 1-2 pounds is about right. I was concerned that the rectangular shape would result in uneven beans, but I have found that to not be the case as the machine has enough vibration that the beans swirl in. I tested batches where I constantly stirred the sides in versus just letting the machine run and I couldn't tell a difference.
I turn mine to dough and turn the heatgun on. The intermittent stirring lasts 3 minutes at which point I dump the beans in.
I am not using a lid, just the HG on the side of the machine (breadman) and I am running about 15 minutes to just starting 2nd crack. I am using a IR thermometer from Harbor Freight, so I am not sure of the accuracy of my temps, going to about 435-445. I am trying to get consistent heat readings but I found I need to keep the beam away from the HG wash.
I have been very impressed, especially because I had everything so the setup was free. I have been keeping the roast a little long as I seem to prefer that flavor profile. So far I have been only using the blends from SM. I drink a cap with 30g espresso to 4 ounces of milk/foam.
