Also , if the OP has an after market coffee roasting basket, it may be the 8 inch diameter one I have been looking at. That basket shoiuld work much better than the little drum I put together because the larger diameter puts the beans closer to the radiant heat source, but the roast will probably be different (and easier) because of it.

Thanks Grim
That is a great idea to tilt it so the element is under the drum, I will give that a try. I really like the drum so they arent popping and flying around.

I tried larger batch last night, ~175g. Also the ambient temp was much lower. This batch took much longer to roast and came out a bit uneven but it may be because of the blend. You should probably try smaller batch sizes.
I did come up with another trick to get the temp up without adding heat though. I noticed a lot of heat escaping from the top and bottom of the glass cover. When the temp stalled at 435 I took my super heavy duty leather burning log handling gloves and laid them across these openings and the temp started rising immediately.
Another thing I might try is relocating the drum closer to the elements. It should be easy to modify the bracket, and I think I can do it such that the motor can remain where it is. Or maybe I'll just add the heatgun permanently, or use some parts from another appliance to add heat.
