I used a Black and Decker but have built a few of these and some bread makers turn way too fast and fling the beans all over the place. After stripping mine down to the basics I hook it to a plug and give it a try. Around 35 to 40 turns in 10 seconds works, but much over that is trouble. I also find that the machine with the wide laid down oven leaves a bit more room for the pot for the beans. Today I am modifying wine with an insulated double walled pot to see if it will do more beans in a single roast without increasing the roast time. I'll post my results. Doug

My agitator paddle tossed the beans up pretty far until I removed 85% of the paddle (~2" sq material) and bolted on a single arm of 1/8" music wire which hovers about 1/8" above the bottom of the chamber. Huge difference and does well now.

Well, today a friend and I did our first roast with our new and improved insulated pot (or oven) in our quest to make a two pound home roaster. The limitation to 1 lb. seemed to come from the fact that a convection oven top could't produce enough heat for more than one pound in a pot. Adding more beans made the roast take too long, over 20 minutes. We now made a double walled insulated pot and tried 1 1/2 pounds and it did it in fifteen minutes so I think when we get a bit bigger pot to accommodate two ponds of beans we will be able to do it in around 16 to 18 minutes and have enough heat to then work on the roast profile. I'll post when we do the 2 pound upgrade. Cheers, Doug
