I wanted a place to go to discuss experimentation pre and post blend.... I use the Sweet Maria green beans, but I am flying blind trying to make a blend that fits in a macchiato or a great cappa.... I have basically been blending what I have left.... let me know what you are trying out there....
I have some extra Sidamo left over and I have some new greens on the way... so tonight is roasters night....
DOM...evil genius ...Up to no good in espresso at all times... VIVA la parts de Espresso
Hi Dom... Jim Schulman is the blending guru and there are others here who are tweaking with blends as well...
Jim seems to know the characteristics of existing beans which can be combined workably for pleasant results.
As to pre-post blending, for my use with FR+ units, post blending gives the ability to combine slow roasting and fast roasting beans in the same mix without scorching some while the other is just fininshing 1st crack. In fact it is the only way to get an even blend.
I love Monkey and Moka Kadir, so I tweedle the Monkey trying to niggle it into as even a roast as I can - even roasting early morning or late night for lower ambient temps - and the Moka Kadir I assemble from pre-roasted beans using Tom's recipe (go to the greens section and look up Moka Kadir...the recipe is there).
Still my favorite, and it is better since I am post roast blending.
One could combine all the slow beans into one roast and all the fast ones similarly. I just convert my ratios into batches - 1 batch per part in the ratio. In other words, a 4-2-2 ratio would be 4 batches of the main bean and two of each of the others...or 2 of the main and one of each of the others.
This is one place the smaller capacity of the FR+ shines.
so I tweedle the Monkey trying to niggle it into as even a roast as I can
100 bonus points to Larry, for using "tweedle," "monkey'" and "niggle" in the same sentence, quite possibly for the first time in the history of the written word ;P

According to this guy, these words exist on the same page only one other place on the internet! They are not in the same sentence in the other example, however, so I think Larry does get the points (I don't think we can count Flimbag's wife as a reliable reference).
