I have the good fortune of being able to swing a trip to Oahu and the Big Island next month. My old roommate is taking command of a submarine and I'm using it as an excuse to go back to Hawaii and bring my oldest along for a trip to the volcanoes.
Any recommendations for the best place (not necessarily the cheapest) to buy beans or tour would be appreciated. Most of the websites I've found are stores for roasted coffee.
Also - recommendation for degree of roast would be appreciated.

I definitely swing by and say hi to Bob & Cea @ Smith Farms they are the growers, pickers and packers of their own Kona coffee (everything by hand) - very cool people.

Absolutley!! Smithfarms is without a doubt the best Kona I have ever had! You will be in for a treat. {:-D Everything's personal preference, but to a few to several secs into 2nd crack is great, City to full City roast, you DONT want to ruin this bean!

Thanks for info. I dropped them an e-mail but have not heard anything as of yet.
The last time I visited the big island, this place was memorable just because of the name. Now I see they have franchised. The coffee was hardly memorable though, and this was before I was a CG. I still like the name however.

Make sure you post a run-down of the tour, if you get in. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like to hear about it, and live vicariously through your travels ;)
