Subject: Bread Machine Conversion

After reading on CG regarding bread machine use I set out today to hit the local thrift stores and returned with this guy for $14...

After some unscrewing, snipping, guts removal, etc... I removed the main piece I needed...

I will hardwire the motor to a switch.

I don't like the idea of the Teflon off-gassing so I removed the paddle base from the bucket and will replace the bucket with a stainless steel bowl.

Next thing to do is to cut down the white siding and then build a cover for this.

I plan to install a set of 120V sockets and two light switches as well.  One switch for the motor and the other for the outlets.

Subject: Bread Machine Use - Drum vs upright tub?

I plan to go out after work to a few thrift stores to find a few tubs to build a container to hold beans on my bread machine base and I got to thinking... Would a horizontal drum lined with a few paddles with the heat gun pointing straight in yield a more even roast?

Got the base done for the most part.  Just need to cut a small cover to install over the motor drive gear.

The right switch toggles the motor power while the left switch toggles power to the outlets.

Used a ~15 foot AC cable for the power.

Bottom view...

Feet came off the bread machine.  Had to cut a hole for the motor to fit in the base.  Used 5/8"(I think) cutting board material for the base and back cover.

The shield is aluminum while the inner bowl is stainless steel w/ aluminum clad(pot handle removed - had to drill the spot welds in order to snap off the handle).

This will provide roughly 3/4" of air around the bowl and on the bottom of the bowl to provide an air layer of insulation.  I plan to put in a 1/2" piece of fiberglass gasket material(tightly woven material you see around your oven door) to provide a seal between the bowls.

I also need to go back to Goodwill and get a lid for the inner bowl and will cut a few holes in it for the heat gun and exhaust.  :)

Will build a pot handle out of 3/16" music wire.

My Sweet Maria's green bean sampler shipped today as well.  Woot!

Your project is looking very nice indeed.  I really like using the bread machine motor since they are so strong compared to a Stir Crazy or UFO popcorn maker.  I just started  using an unmodified bread machine and have finished 5 roasts in it.  The last two have been 800 gram batches.  I'm using what I already owned in a Milwaukee brand two speed heat gun.

So what are you plans for the heat application?  Are you going to hand hold the heat gun or use a Corretto style holder?  How about cooling the beans?  If you don't have a cooler already, and you are already in the building mode get that part of the process done now as well instead of waiting forever like I originally did.

Enjoyed the photos and looking forward to the finished project.

(Thanks for the kind words, Rick.

For heat, I have a 1200 watt Black and Decker heat gun (Click Here (www.blackanddecker.com))

For cooling, I have a 5-gallon bucket and plan to pick up a colander for it.  I have a large shop vac so heat shouldn't be an issue with my ~1.3lb / week roasts.

sounds like a wonderful set up, can't wait for the finished pictures.  You might even give me a push to mod my bread machine, but so far all I have done is remove the sight glass window and my heat gun fits nicely in the hole.
