hello i roast coffee at my house and am wondering which is the best blend for a strong taste of coffee. i am personally a big fan of columbian does it matter how dark i roast the beans or are they just weak. Any suggestions on a specific type to blend with columbian or do i need to roast them for a longer time period. Thanks

The darker the roast goes the more of the roasting apparatus affects it's profile. Dark roasts tend to be smokey and really bold in taste and body because they take the roasting devices profile instead of the coffees profile.
If you want a smokey and bold flavour than you can roast just about any coffee bean to a Vienna or French roast (Dark and Darkest). However harder beans will give you a better result. I would also recommend beans from Asia/Pacific regions and some of the more southern African beans. They tend to have flavours that may still come out to help compliment a smokey bold kick.
You will want to bring the coffees well into the 2nd crack.

In my experience, Columbians and Central Americans don't do well at roasts darker than Full City. You lose all the fruit and flower notes that make these coffees so good. I have had good luck blending Central Americans with Ethiopians to develop a more full flavored and complex blend. I roast two single origins separately and blend them after roasting.
How are you brewing your coffee? The flavor in the cup can also be changed by finer grind, slower brewing, or using more grounds.

I have to admit that I really like some of the Mexican coffees at darker roasts. They can get really chocolate tasting (to my taste buds at least).
This contrasts with Sumatran coffees which can be roasted dark but just keep tasting like dirt to my taste buds.
Maybe the original poster could just try a grab bag or different varieties and roast up each one. I think a few of the vendors offer "samplers" of green beans.
You know, I'm with you on this one. Maybe I've never found the right one or maybe I don't know how to roast the Sumatras. Whatever, they just taste like dirt.

I'm a huge fan of Ethiopians roasted dark for something with oomf when you need it! Note that to me "dark" does not mean oily, I won't go that dark, nor charcoal. Add some Brazil to that, maybe a little yemen.

Just finished roasting some Tanzanian Peaberry to a [takes drum out of Behmor and shakes loose the chaff] city+. This was an 8 oz batch on a 1/2 P3 C profile with two minutes pre-roast.
Earlier, I roasted 13 oz of Guatemala Dry Process Oriente, that's a real kick, an unusual dry processed Guat with fruit and chocolate, but I think the supply has dried up on this one.
I'll have to remember to post my impression of the Tanz after several days rest.
