There is no need to stir the beans - the popper agitates them well enough. It is certainly not the best roasting solution in the world, but the roasts are very even.

Thanks Todd. Can you stir the beans satisfactorily with the glass chimney?

Two of my three poppers agitate the beans well enough, but one doesn't. It requires me to stir the beans constantly to avoid burning them. Quality control on these poppers is lacking; what do ya expect from a $10 appliance...?
The other two have MUCH stronger fans, which allows me to almost double that batch size....which is great. (I can fill a quart mason jar with two batches.) But I have to almost entirely cover the top with a bent-top can in order to generate enough heat to shorten the roast time. Otherwise, I bake the beans; they won't even get through the 1C.

@lionofdarma - I just started home-roasting using the same popper (I recognize the base) rescued from our kitchen remodeling. For now, I've been using the stock plastic assembly it came with and letting the chaff blow around the yard or front of my garage and watching the odd bean jump out as the roast completes. Do you have any problems with chaff dropping out of your lint catcher back into the roast? Or is the air blast sufficient to keep the chaff out of the way? How about when you shut off to dump and cool the beans?

The chaff pretty much gets caught in the lint catcher, but there is some left in the beans. When the roast is done, I always dump them into a metal colander and and spin it around to cool them off a bit and them dump them on a rimmed baking sheet to fully cool down. The remaining chaff can just be blown away.

Walgreens popper/chimney problem solved!!
I removed the top/bottom from a Pink Salmon can. Bought a sheet of thin aluminum ~6" high, and wrapped a bit of it around the can, making sure the aluminum overlaps. Securing the can and aluminum in place, drilled a couple holes where the aluminum overlaps. Secured with nuts and bolts (on outside). It works great, because of its smooth sides and the cone-like shape slides right down into the chamber without scratching the plastic. The bolts on the outside serve as a way to grip the popper as I tilt it. HTH.....
