I need ideas on what to use as a chimney on my Walgreens air poppers. The chambers measure ~3 inches.
Right now I'm using a Campbells soup can as chimney. I use it on all of them. But, it's really too small both in circumference and height. I drilled a small hole towards the bottom and screwed in a metal loop so as to make the can stay while stirring the beans. I lucked-out with my last two poppers, as they have very good fans, so they're jumping over the top of the soup can at the end of the roasts. Not too many, but I want it fixed.
I hesitate using a glass lantern chimney, as I'll probably break it. Plus, I need to be able to stir the beans throughout the roast.

I use a glass lantern chimney from Walmart. It's a thicker glass than one I bought from a craft store and I've only broken one so far. You should see what I do to it. :-) The bottom has a slight ridge which has to be ground down to fit the popper and I cut off the top to fit a chaff collector. I use a Dremel to do both jobs. The glass has a 3 inch fracture at the top from the cutting but it hasn't broken apart for 2 years now. I have a couple of spares but haven't needed them.

Thanks ronnie_b.
I had been leaving the soup can off until the very end of the roast, but the fans on my new poppers are good enough so I'm able to roast a full cup at a time, so I need the soup can on from the start of the roast. The beans are jumping over the soup can at the end of the roast. I roasted last night and my travel mug was kinda clumsy...so I'm kinda back to square-1. Something else to obsess over......;-)

I started with a large can of baked beans with both ends cut off and the mesh from an abandoned strainer. I hose clamped the mesh at the top to catch the chaff and then later added a hose clamp (the size for a dryer vent, I had several lying around) at the bottom with some L shaped clips from a bookcase to keep the can from tipping. This worked well for me and the chaff screen would block the chaff at the top and help to retain some heat, but could be pulled off the popper quickly and emptied if need be.
I switched to a glass chimney I found at a thrift store before I upgraded my roaster to give me better visibility. For this, I found a different small strainer could be dropped over the top of the chimney to catch the chaff.

Hello. When I first started roasting I used a toastmaster popper. I fashioned a little cylinder out of perforated aluminum I found at home depot. I riveted the seam, and made that cylinder big enough to go into the popper chamber about 1 inch, while having just enough of it to go out the top so that beans would not come out while roasting. What was good about it was that the perforations allowed the heat and air to escape without having the beans fly out.

I also use a globe from a gas lantern - with the addition of the lint catcher for a clothes dryer, to catch the chaff.
