After seeing several pictures of a HG sticking through the hole in the lid of a BM I kept thinking there had to be another way beside sticking the nose of the heatgun down through the hole in the lid of the BM. I tried it and almost melted my lid.

Here's a mod of my own design that I have never seen before on any forum. It truly makes it "hands free" and you can use the Router speed control to vary the roasting temp to where you want it.

I have seen other people make a cover for the BM, I drilled a 1 1/2" hole in mine. The flexible aluminum hose is a Heat manifold riser hose from an auto supply store. It's 18" long and cost $2.99, it has a light plastic coating so be sure and burn it off first before roasting a batch.

I used a Harbor Freight heat gun on sale for $9.99. There is a small screw on the bottom of the front protective cover, if you remove it you have about 3" of the metal tube of the heat gun sticking out to slide the 1 1/2" aluminum tubing onto and fasten it on with.

It works beautifully and brings off a 1# batch in about 12 minutes or so. You can speed it up or slow it down as you wish.

Here's a picture of the cover I put a hole in for the Aluminum tubing, you can see I bent one edge of it up to let the chaff and some air escape and also to see into to check the roast. I just use a flashlight to see down into the beans.

The hose is very flexible and when I am finished I just lift it out of the hole, pull the can and dump it into my colander.

Pete,

Nice idea! I just got a used BM and HG, and was planning to get things going in the next week or so. I think I may now try to mimick what you did.
Thanks for posting the idea and pictures!

Glad you like it Jordan,  I am hoping someone else takes the idea even further.  I have seen so much discussion on different Forums about how people have melted the plastic on the ends of their heat guns or have the fan sucking chaff back into the heat gun I just had to try the aluminum tubing idea.

I hope you like it,  I made the lid slide on and off with a little flange turned under on two opposite sides.  When I dump the beans to cool them I just leave the lid on and dump them out the open slot in the lid.

Pete,

Could you tell me what store you got that hose at? The guy at Auto Zone didn't have anything like it. Well, he had something like it, but it was partially made from cardboard, so....probably a bad idea.

Also, did you use some kind of high-temp tape to seal it around the heat gun, or did it fit snugly?

Thanks,
Jordan

I got it at O'Reilly Automotive.  They are a pretty good size auto supply chain.  I just used a worm drive hose clamp to secure it to the nose of the HG.  The hose was out on one of the displays and not in the back room of the store,  and is 100% aluminum with a light plastic coating as I mentioned.

Good innovation Pete, I have my hg set up on a sliding shaft for easy adjustment of heat to beans and it works well for me. I love seeing the ideas fellow coffee lovers come up with for better roasting and coffee, keep up the good work.
