The event I have been dreading just occured. The roast heater in my Z&D appears to have burned out. It happened at the early part of a roast.
I think I saved the coffee. I dumped the beans into a bowl, then into my HWP. It took three batches with the HWP to complete the Z&D charge. Since the Z&D has a cat I've become careless about turning on the range hood so I set off the smoke alarm.
I haven't opened the machine yet but piliminary tests point to the roast heater. Since I have been dumping nearly 700 Watts into the heater Mr. Zack and Mr. Danni intended for 400 Watts for several years it was bound to happen.
The pain is that Nesco won't supply the heater so I'll have to get some Nicrome wire and make my own.

I dissassembled the machine tonight and the roast heater is toast. The wire is weak and brittle near the break.
I have a parts machine. As I remember the roast heater it it didn't look too good but if it is useable I'll attempt to use it untill I can get some Nichrome wire and rebuild my unit.
If I can't get it working real soon, the Behmor is looking real good.

I believe there is also a simplified schematic of my roast control variable transformer. I had promised a full schemo of it but I haven't gotten around to tracing it out. When I built it I could have done it from memory. I should not have procrastinated.
I'll try to take a picture of the Z&D roast heater and post it.

I removed the roast heater and shot some pictures. This one is the top view of the heater. The hole in the center is where the hot air passes up to the roast chamber. The screw holes are for the small screws around the aluminum base upon the roast chamber sits.

This is a picture of the bottom. The small hole in the center is where the auger drive shaft passes. Note the broken off piece of mica. That stuff is fragile even when new. After years of flogging my 400 Watt heater wit nearly 700 Watts it is very fragile. The black RTV on the leads is not original. I used it the secure the leads when I rerouted them to my added relay.
