Subject: New home roaster (Behmor 1600) to debut at SCAA Long Beach.

Just got word today about a new home roasting appliance to debut at the SCAA show.

It's called the Behmor 1600.

It's designed by Joe Behm, and he's been working on it since 2000. The claim was a "smokeless" 1 pound roaster, and James at the CoffeeProject.com has had one for a while, and says it's really is smokeless, even when roasting a full pound of green coffee, even when taking the roast dark.

The machine itself looks a bit like a toaster oven, sitting on the kitchen counter. Except the front of the machine is solid, save for a viewing glass area to see the beans. The interior is lighted as well, making it easier to see the beans.

Other key points about this roaster:

- 1/4, 1/2, 1 pound capacity (you set it on the front panel)
- Fairly quiet, at around 50db at max sound.
- 1500W power
- a "Patented cooling system" (though I'm waiting for a response about how the roaster cools - long the achilles heel of most home roasters)
- Size is 17.5" long, 10.5" high, 12.5" deep
- Programmable profiles and temperature settings
- Easy "extend roast" buttons with (I'm guessing" no limitations like the Hottop

And probably the best news of all - will most likely retail for less than $300.... possibly way less.

Here's the control panel design.

Here's a mock up of the flyer that will be handed out at the SCAA - sorry for the poor quality, had to really scale it down for posting here.

Wow!  Here's to hoping it's as good as it sounds.  Hopefully there's not too much hype in the ad.  I hope that it has a solid thermo with a very tiny deadband.

If it's all that the ad says and word-of-mouth is good on quality of the roasted product then I don't see why I wouldn't buy one.

Is this a hot air roasting design or a drum roaster?

An earlier interview with the designer said it uses radiant heat, not fluid bed.

A whole pound?  In the kitchen?  In January??  Count me in!

Yeah, I think I remember reading that it is a quartz heating element used. I would assume there's a drum involved, since the beans have to be agitated in some way.

Again, I'm really curious about the cooling function. The big problem with almost all home roasting appliances (save the hottop) is cooling the beans.

Yes, it says it on your mock up pic of your flyer above Mark, "Thermostatically controlled quartz roasting elements". {;-)

Can't wait to see the reviews on this. I would love to be able to roast more than the ~150g/batch my modded air popper handles, but don't really want to shell out the money for a hottop or gene cafe.

Also, the lack of smoke sounds great. Currently, my air popper spews smoke and chaff everywhere, meaning I have to roast outside (difficult during the 6 months when it's cold and rainy everyday in Vancouver) and I have to take a shower immediately after roasting to get the smoke and chaff out of my hair!
