This is a very old thread but I'm interested in this method. I was originally going to use a hg/bm. If anyone has been using this method I would be interested in hearing the results. If the OP has some feedback on quality of roast. Since this method isn't using hot air then is it more of a drum roast profile?
I have tried using just the heating element in the BM and 500 to 600 watts just isn't enough to roast a full pound of beans in a reasonable time without baking them. A 1200 watt HG takes about 12 minutes or so to roast a pound in my HG/BM. Sometimes if I want to roast 1 1/2 # I use the built in element to preheat the BM and leave it on until the chaff starts coming off, then I turn it off.
Your experience may differ and roast a small amount might work but the built in element is just not big enough. IMHO

I preheated for 10 minutes to get roaster temp to 375. I roast in an unheated garage about 50F last night. Roast took 16 minutes to complete first crack. It was hard to hear 1st crack and seemed weak or fewer than I'm used to hearing, pulled just as second crack started. Roast was darker than I'm used to, maybe the longer roast? Beans were SM monkey blend. It would be nice to have a boost in heat. Would it help if I drilled the bread tub to allow more heat transfer from the element and maybe higher warm up temp? Roast color was very even.
