Hey Y'all,
I don't mean to be an advertisement, but here's a decent product at a fair price with good product support after the sale. I figure some of you could use a good thermometer for roasting since I see a lot of posts from home roast newbies. It seems in many cases if you had good temperature measurement it would be easier to home in on a en effective routine with less guesswork.
OK - so here is a digital cooking thermometer that measures to over 500F, has a countdown timer and temperature alarm, and costs $20 delivered. They tell me they have these in stock again (they were apparently out of stock for a while). RT 912 Coking Thermometer
The reason I found out is that I sent them an email when my probe started to fritz and said after 6 months it was getting flaky. They wrote back the next day indicating that they were out of stock but as soon as the new units arrived they would send me a probe. It was maybe 2 weeks later I got a message from them with the tracking number and then my new probe arrived the next day.
Here's the impressive part: They responded, they kept thier word, they sent the replacement at no charge, never asked for the original to be returned, and didn't even ask for my receipt. Oh, and by the way, the new probe has an improved design with strain relief where the wire connects to the probe (this is the spot where my old one failed).
So maybe this is an advertisement after all, but I just think these folks are deserving. There may be other thermometers that are more expensive, more precise, maybe more reliable, but for $20 you can't beat this one for roasting coffee (and maybe for cooking too)

Great havin' that long chat Jon, sorry about that! {;-) I ordered two of the thermometers, & they have 400 in stock so not to worry! I mentioned the Coffeegeek forums, who we all are, & the specific link to Jon's post about the excellent customer service he had with this company to the 2 ladies I talked to, Ashley in customer service, & Becca for International shipping.
After about 35 minutes on the phone & describing/telling them about how Fedex & UPS to Canada isn't a resonable option because of the exorbiant brokerage fees, Becca came up with a USPS Air mail solution. Becca told me to hold on for a few more minutes & she said she could work out an even better way to ship to me. They also took note for their shipping department of all the shipping experiences I had that I told them, different ways & options I mentioned, Canada Post's $5 handling fee versus the others brokerage fees., USPS small green CN-22 Customs form (Old C1) PS form 2976, declared values, etc.
Becca saved me 38.8% over the 1st quote by using a bubble pac Priority Mailer! So I'm a very happy camper now!! {:-D

thanks for the info Jon I only started roasting and my equipment is a toastess popcorn machine. I don't know if it can be incorporated into this machine (I'm sure I can rig it up tho) but if not, I think it would be a great asset for my "coffee career" when I upgrade.... which will probably be tomorrow... ;-) Just been relocated to the garage after 5 roasts in the kitchen so I think I will need a roaster when the winter comes... Thanks again.... Jon
