Caffeine doesn't have the insomnia effect on everyone. I had a PharmD explain it to me once, but forget what she called it. It's not the same as the effect it has on people with ADD/ADHD, where stimulants actually decrease the hyperactivity and increase concentration. But in some adults, the effect can be similar. It's I THINK a parasympathetic thing.
If I can't sleep, I get up and have a cup of coffee.
Tea doesn't have the same effect. I've always figured it was the small amounts of theophylline in tea that did me in.

Speaking of side effects,
For me caffeine doesn't prevent me from sleeping, but does help me from getting sleepy, if that makes any sense. In other words, if my intention is to fall asleep I can without problem. But if I am actively engaged in smomething, it keeps me focused.
Also I notice this weird reaction to too much caffeine: my hearing gets affected. I can hear just fine but my ears drums feel impacted..anyone ever felt that?
