It can be yes, and it can be a total nightmare.  For someone just starting out, figure out more what you like, etc. Personally, I wouldn't even consider roasting until you decide, long term, what you want to drink and how you want to drink it. (and personally, I will never bother. yes bother, because that is what it would be to me, a bother.)

It seems Rebecca (Msboo) shares your opinion.  There are many people for whom home roasting is not a good idea. One should know oneself. But the OP seemed interested, and my years of enjoyment as a home roaster seemed enough to provide some mild encouragement. Please understand that I'm not telling anyone what she should do; nor setting up roasting as a threshold to enjoying coffee.

In addition to roasting for the two of us, I roast for several others who know -- through their association with me -- exactly what goes into the roasting.  I'm happy they like my coffee, and not about to tell them they should start roasting for themselves.

Check out the "Recommended Roasters" list (which needs updating) on H-B, and order away.  For the little it's worth, I like Klatch for its choice of 90+ point coffees, and believe that Mike Perry (Klatch's owner/roast-master) is one of the few, best roasters in the US.

When I was stationed in Lemoore, CA there was no place in central CA that offered good coffee. Instead of trying to drink *$ or a local roaster's burnt swamp water blend, I decided to order the whirley pop and 8lbs sampler from Sweet Marias. Even though I've roasted coffee for a few years before that, owned another popper and behmor in storage, I found getting a second popper worked nicely for my needs. You'll spend less by ordering green coffee, it will last longer, and you'll always have fresh coffee on hand. Also, if you get a digital thermometer or thermocouple to measure temperatures, you can effectively predict when 1st and 2nd cracks will occur, thus timing your roast cycle accurately and having perfect coffee. By spending a good 30 minutes a week, you can obtain some of the freshest coffee around!

To me roasting is one of the most enjoyable things about coffee. I feel almost like a mad scientist whenever I log results. I also enjoy it's smell and the weird looks people give me when they walk by! To me my roasters are my favorite pieces of coffee equipment I own.
