Subject: Why do we drink coffee and/or hang around in coffee places?

Someone asked me this the other day. They understood the concept of good coffee. They didn't get the concept of going out and sitting around drinking coffee.

I said some people go to try new things, they said, okay we get that, once in awhile.

I said some people go for the free wifi. They didn't get that, but then I guess they've never had the need.

I said some people go just to be around others who share their love for coffee, I got a funny stare.

I said some people go just to go relax somewhere out of the house, sort of like other people go to a bar to dink beer. They didn't get that either.

So why do you go?

Thought it was an interesting discussion.

Why do we eat out or drink at a (incl. coffee) bar, when it's much cheaper to do the same at home?

Because we can consume a product, we don't have available at home. Because the product in question is very good. Because we can socialize. Because it's convenient (e.g. we don't have to wash the dishes and clean the kitchen afterwards). Because we're out of town/on the road for some other reason and want some food or drink. Because we want to meet new people. Because it's fun. Because we can.

What kind of party poopers did you talk to? ;-)

If the people who host the location have done their side of the equation: the place is inviting, relaxing, offers an enjoyable taste experience without negative repercussions, and it is different from my other daily experiences... offers the opportunity to interrelate with other human beings in all their possible diversity.

(seriously, someone seems to be expressing their query from a very limited experience set...)

Oh, I have to say... this wifi thingie... VERY nice in doctor's and dentist's offices, grocery stores... malls... and on and on... / wow, was I surprised how much I like it! (I really hope my cable company goes to cellular like saturation of the local metro area with wifi access - amazing having that little smartphone/tablet fully available all day long.)

I wish I had time to go to a coffee place to sit, whether for the coffee, the wifi, or conversation with a friend.  It's a very rare occasion.  It would be a treat for me because it means I have the luxury of nothing to do.  For that, I would even sacrifice the quality of the coffee and go to *$ or CBTL.

I like to hang around coffee places when I am working on my laptop.  I can stretch out, clear my head and enjoy a change of scenery.  I also love listening to the music they play and sometimes there are even live bands.

I would imagine for the same reason as going to a bar, to pick up hot chicks.

Well, it is man's nature to see different things. We are fun of looking some exciting things. Drinking coffee in your home may add excitement as well as drinking in some known coffee shops. The issue here is what makes you happy and how to divert your attention to some other things that can broaden your perspective in life.

Did you know...? Dark roast coffees actually have less caffeine than lighter roasts due to the fact that the process of roasting burns off caffeine.

Different strokes for different folks.  I just don't understand why some people think others that enjoy different things are odd.

Except, I much prefer a chick with caffeine twitters to one that is puking and falling down every two steps.

Like many, I started with coffee from a tin can. One afternoon, a college roommate brought home a double Americano for me to try. I remember it tasted like I was being poisoned at first, but half way through, I was hooked!

I enjoy going to coffee shops with my wife and/or friends for the ambience.
