Between green grassy sour astringent and bitter carbon ash is the middle roast range where most good beans will peak in aroma intensity, complexity, and balance.  Obviously this is what coffee is supposed to taste like....
A fairly wide range of interpretation can be made to work (by roaster and brewer) given a particular bean.
Maybe it is 'in your face' intensity of espresso that invites the abuse.

I enjoy the fact that people are experimenting and not stuck in a style. When you experiment the results of the extremes are interesting. Regardless of roast level though, a mediocre bean, a poorly roasted bean or a mediocre cafe will not yield good results. That bugs me more than someone trying something out.
