I just saw the Nepal episode of Dangerous Grounds on the Travel Channel. I agree that it is a bit of a caffeinated chase show. That said, I liked it. Not the wild driving and flying around Pokhara, although I have been there and enjoyed the same bus riding challenges they had. I loved that he roasted and cupped on the spot, and later he made a Chemex brew to sell the beans to his client. I recently returned from visiting some coffee fincas in Guatemala and feel like there are good shows to be made using the Dangerous Grounds formula. Well , maybe with less caffeine and more actual content. For instance, what was planned for the Nepal farmers thousands of pounds of coffee that Dangerous Grounds happened to come across on a whim and a GPS? Hell, it was THE day that they had 24 hours to get it to Katmandu before it went moldy? What and where was the market if an American coffee buyer didn't show up on foot to buy the whole harvest? What is traditionally done with that much coffee when farms are several days from a major town or village?
In Guatemala, a local coop or independent dealer will buy the beans from various small farms and take the responsibility for processing and/or marketing them. A bigger coffee farm does it all on their own. In Nepal, they acted like farmers had no idea what to do with their product. From watching the farmers work, they seemed to know exactly what they were doing.
