The Thai Anantara chain of hotels serves their coffee loving customers a new specialty called Black Ivory. The coffee berries have been devoured by elephants and the green beans collected from their dung. The coffee is supposed to be especially mild, because digestion has removed proteins from the beans which is suggested to render the coffee less bitter.

I guess elephants are easier to come by than civet cats even in Thailand, and they are able to eat larger quantities of coffee berries, too. Now, what animal is largely available in our parts? We could call it like Pink Gold!

I wonder if Nespresso might be interested in this brilliant business idea. I just hope nobody steals it. Patent pending. Oink, oink...

Elephants are kind of a big deal in Thailand.  They have the biggest (maybe only) elephant hospital in the world.  Most of the patients there had injured feet from landmines.  That was depressing and kind of made me angry.

In addition to their other contributions to their society elephants are used to process fiber into paper pulp. Really! Elephant dung is washed filtered and dried to make paper.  As part of our "learning and discovery" we went to such a plant.  My wife actually got into the process at a demo station.  I elected to just photograph the process.

I suppose the paper plants can now expand their product line.

Thanks for the link, Ian. I only had a German newspaper article as a reference.

It's the Daily Mail so the article is likely to be 100% accurate.  ;)

I never thought Black Ivory coffee was a hoax. It just sounds like a bad joke, doesn't it? The German newspaper article was along the same lines as the Daily Mail.

Ridiculous.  "Black Ivory".  God.  And how do they get the elephants up in the trees without breaking them; geez.

"Why do elephants paint their toenails red?"

To hide in cherry trees.

"Ever see an elephant in a cherry tree?"

See how well it works!
