Subject: Any data on the size of the espresso market in the USA?

Hi,

I have a long time friend who is in a business in decline due to new(er) technology.

I'm encouraging him to migrate to the espresso accessory / hardware business.

But I need some data on how large the market is both on an annual basis and an installed basis.

Can anyone point me towards a site or specific data on;

how many espresso machines are in use (both home and commercially)

how many machines are sold in the USA each year

how many espresso grinders are in use (both home and commercially)

how many grinders are sold in the USA each year

If it has a steam wand, then to me it's an espresso machine.

When I needed the installed base for motorcycles I was able to go to a .gov site.

It showed that there are 6.5 million motorcycles registered in the US.

That's the type of thing I need.

Thanks much for any tips/advice or pointers.

M./

There was a post like this a few months ago.  Unfortunately, I don't think the inquirer gathered much useful information here, but you might be able to find it with the search tool to verify.

Thanks for that.

I've been climbing through the search engines but haven't found anything.

Maybe the SCAA will have some data.

Thanks,

I'd also suggest he peruse online vendors who sell such devices...easily googled.
He'll get an idea what's hot/new/most popular, etc.

EDIT: none of the companies he'll find would be in business if there was not a market substantial enough. That said, I'll wager it's the PROFESSIONAL coffee shops, cafe's etc who do the majority of accessory purchase, as they wear out stuff MUCH faster than would a home barista.
