If we're talking americano vs. brewed coffee from a coffee machine, I would say Americano, but as Barry brought up, there are other many other methods. I really enjoy a pour over or a french press, especially when it highlights my favorite aspects of the particular coffee I'm tasting.
I'm going to agree with the general consensus and suggest that you go out and get a solid french press for like $20, get yourself some quality coffee with a roast date on the bag that is no later than 2 weeks old (preferably at about 3 days post roast so that you have time to enjoy it while it's at its peak), grind it fresh on a capable burr grinder, prepare the french press properly, and enjoy. Try that out for a bit. If the difference doesn't do anything for you, don't put too much money into a hobby that can be an UNBELIEVABLE money pit. If you're blown away by the extent of the rich, vibrant flavors that coffee can produce (Like just about all of us were at one point), then you're probably already looking at your next upgrade.
You may want to try a coffee from one of the bigger names. Verve is one of my favorites and offers free shipping. All of their coffees offer 3 descriptors that will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect from the coffee, so you can find one that you like and they'll send it on over to you right after they roast it.
