hello all, Im very new to the whole coffee afficionado thing... Im thinking about trying some kopi luwak soon... Is the website realkopiluwak.com a good site that sells the authentic product?
Also, I have a nice drip machine, and I buy whole bean dunkin donuts coffee from the store, and keep it at room temp in an airtight container and only grind as much as i need to brew right then. From what I have been reading, it sounds like what im drinking is completely crappy... Is this true???? Is everything completely stale and crappy at the supermarket no matter what?

Because according to professional tasters, Kopi Luwak is not a good coffee (it just doesn't taste good) PLUS it's terrribly high priced PLUS many sources are cruel to the animals in trying to produce more product.

A better question is WHY do you want to drink it?
You do realize of course that the Kopi is taken from the excrement of a civet (small cat-like animal)?

If you're looking for something expensive and exclusive, then why not buy a truly high quality coffee expertly roasted by one of the better roasters?  Check out Counter Culture, Paradise, Stumptown, and Ecco Cafe to name a few....they all sell extraordinary coffees roasted with care by expert craftspeople.  Seek out the auction lots and microlots and highly-rated coffees (I mean rated by someone like Ken David's Coffee review)...

Here are some extremely good coffees to try that leave Kopi FAR behind on the quality and taste scale:

Counter Culture Coffee's Aida's Grand Reserve or any of the Microlot Offerings from CCC
(I particularly enjoyed the Sundried natural process El Salvador)

Ecco Caffe's Organic Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Konga Co-op Reserve is amazing brewed in a press pot.

PT's Passport Coffees (any of them)

And if you want some $100+ per pound coffee that is truly a unique experience try Panama Esmerelda Geisha, it has set the record at auction for the most expensive coffee in the world (three years in a row)

Basically, why would anyone drink $hyte product when you can have the finest coffee on the planet?

DD is commercial crap, especially compared to the offerings from the artisan roasters.  And all grocery store coffee is OLD and stale and dried out (unless the store has a roaster in house - and then it may be fresh but chances are the roasts are NOT crafted but roasted as fast as possible to reduce cost) and the beans may not be very high quality

If you want the BEST - go with the real deal.
Buy from artisans who do direct trade with the growers.

Welcome to coffeegeek!  :-)

And one more VERY implortant thing: No matter how you brew you need a good grinder if you want to really TASTE the coffee.  Take a word of advice and go get one for your drip and french press brewing, it's a truly sound investment

I'm not sure what you use for brewing, but most drip brewers use thermoblock "boilers" to heat the water and so they do not brew at a good temperature and will ruin your expensive coffees.  Technivorm, Bunn and Newco brewers brew at the right temperature, or you could get an inexpensive French Press or a Melitta pourover cone brewer if you want the most from your coffees

Chiming in late, but . . .

Let me first welcome you, Matthew, to CG.  And now to the point(s) at hand . . .

matt52687 Said:

Even if it were a "good" site selling "authentic" product -- I have no idea/experience with the site personally, and am not passing judgement -- let me echo what's been asked already:  why do you want to try it?

matt52687 Said:

Posted November 6, 2009 link

It tastes like $#!+, what else?

OK, so -- let's recap, shall we Matt?  You know where it comes from, you know how it's made and -- presumably having looked at the website -- you know it's $159 for 8.8 ounces not including "shipping service and possible custom taxes."  And yet . . .

matt52687 Said:

Posted November 6, 2009 link

. . . you're seriously thinking of spending HOW MUCH money of coffee beans???

OK, moving right along . . .

matt52687 Said:

Posted November 5, 2009 link

Yes, it's true.  Everything is stale and crappy at a supermarket.  But, despite the fact you -- even if only for a brief moment -- you considered acquiring some coffee that retails for over $300 a pound . . .

matt52687 Said:

Posted November 6, 2009 link

. . . you cannot/will not consider spending $12-15 a pound for seriously excellent coffee from a top quality micro-roaster, but stick with cheap, stale beans from Dunkin' Donuts poorly stored both before and after the sale.

/ / / / /

Matt, if I seem overly harsh right now, I apologize.  It's because I probably am being overly harsh -- but good coffee does NOT need to be expensive.  It's easy to do, even for a 22-year old unemployed student from Oklahoma.  Coffee is one of the last great affordable luxuries . . . Listen to JonR:  he's given you some solid advice.  You can easily make great coffee; just spend your money wisely.

Cheers,
Jason

well, in one of my posts above, i clearly stated that I was not the one paying for the coffee, my dad was the one who was wanting to purchase the beans. But your alright, it wasn't too harsh ill live. Ill take your guys advice and say screw the hypebeast kopi luwak. I bought a pretty decent french press today.... Still have one of those blade grinders and the "terrible" dunkin donuts whole beans. tried some, and its not too bad coming out of the french press. But then again, I have been drinking it out of a drip machine before. Im wanting to get into this coffee scene, What is the cheapest burr grinder you guys know of, that is still acceptable as a decent grinder? im thinking about trying some kona coffee..... Any suggestions on some roasted beans from a site that are not going to break the bank for me or my father? Thanks again guys.

For french press & drip, I'd go with a hand grinder -- Orphan Espresso has 2 for coffee brewing right now for $45-50 - click here.
