Subject: Coffee Rating Scale 80's or 90's?

I want to try new and different specialty green coffee of single origin.

Using the coffee rating system just seems to make good sense. Do others see a big difference in quality with ratings of 85 or 88's vs into the 90's?  The coffee can get pricy. Is the difference in grade 92 at $16 green really that much better than grade 88 at $6?

I do think specialty coffee is great but I have not bought the 'best of the best' rating 92+. The last order I did w Sweet Marias was w rating of 88 or greater and those coffees are wonderful.  Paradise Roasters offers only 90+ ratings but some of the coffees are over $20 a lb.

Bottom line, are the expensive $20+ coffees that much better than the 80's at a one digit rate?  Do others have an answer or discussion?

Just like in wine, cigars, liquor, olive oil, or any food product that is rated on a point scale, you pay exponentially more for higher ratings.  In coffee, more so than the aforementioned categories, the more expensive retail prices generally correlate with what was paid to the producers.  I would say with absoluteness, that a coffee such as Esmeralda, although three times the price, is NOT three times as good.  That's not to say it isn't an incredible coffee, because it is.  It is the uniqueness and supply that demand the higher price.

There are still some reasonably priced 90+ coffees out there, and I would suggest starting with those to see what you think.  All of the coffees we acquire are rated at 90+ points internally, and there are plenty of $7-$9 / lb green coffees available.
