Subject: Question about starting a coffee shop.

I am 25 and currently in college getting my science degree and then will go to school in the medical related field.  But one thing I really want to do is start a coffeeshop that serves espresso, coffee, espresso drinks, and frappucinos.

There is one Starbucks in my town.  The next Starbucks is one is 15 mile away from the first Starbucks.
There used to be a great quality drive-in coffeeshop in my town that opened in 2003 or so.  Much better that Starbucks.  But they moved because the university purchased the lot to build a softball field.  They moved across the river to another state (a few miles away) but eventually closed.  They now have two locations, both in a hospital.

I don't have a business degree.

Where do I start if I wanted to open a coffeeshop?  With the medical degree (not MD) I would be making at least $75,000 to $100,000 a year right out of school.  I know that the answer will vary but how much income do you make per year as a coffeeshop owner?  Do you have time to yourself or are you constantly busy?

Do you personally know anyone that has started a business from nothing?  If so you may wish to seek them out for guidance.

Starting a bootstrap business generally entails long hours and alot of blood, sweat, and tears.  In the beginning you likely will be looking at most if not all of your receipts going right back into the business.  You may not see a profit for a while.  Maybe even a couple years.

What keeps most new business owners going?  In your case, at the end of the day you pull yourself a shot of espresso and say, "My company made this and it is great."

Put in the hard work, be persistant and determined not to lose sight of your goal, and before you know it you will have a built a good business.

If you are just now thinking about it, you should NOT start now.

You have the time to do the research.  Do it.  By research, I do not mean start a thread that has been posted dozens of times on a consumer coffee forum.

We've all got to start somewhere.

If you have a great love for coffee and also have some great ideas for a coffee business, maybe you should start a coffee shop. This would allow you to mix your love of coffee with something that will make money. It will also let you share your knowledge of great coffees with others and help you make good coffee available to friends and community members. If you want to start a coffee shop, stop thinking about it and start working to make it happen.
