Subject: I hate coffee

I hate coffee. I don't understand why people spend so much money every day on this drink that tastes so bad. But I wanted to find out, so I ordered a small cup at a coffee shop. It was disgusting. Like drinking a cup of pure burnt. My friend was with me, who drinks coffee every day. I asked him why he drank it, and how he got started. He said that he has never liked the taste (which is why he puts sugar and cream in it, so that the bad coffee taste is masked). But he likes having a hot beverage in the morning.

Now, my wife loves coffee. She drinks it every day. I wanted to buy some coffee equipment for her, so I took a look on here (this was for Mother's Day last year) and did some research. I was going to buy her a french press pot, but after reading everything here, realized that she needed a new grinder more than she needed a press pot. So I got her a Baratza Virtuoso as well as the press pot.

Recently, she found a local place that roasts their own beans and will deliver them to our house for free. Last night, was the first time that she's tried out these new beans in her press pot. I was curious, so I had her pour me half a cup.

Wow! That was an incredibly good beverage! No yucky burnt tastes. No yucky bitter tastes. It tasted like that nice smell the coffee gives off, combined with some other interesting (in a good way) flavors. I had no idea that coffee could taste like that. I'm looking forward to having another (this time full) cup tonight.

Anyhow, I just wanted to say thanks to this community for helping me change my mind about coffee.

Haha, that's a great story...  That's a surprisingly similar way to how I came to love broccoli, and subsequently the humor of Dana Carvey...

Thanks guys.

I almost didn't get my cup of coffee last night. My wife ground her beans, but then realized that she had it on the espresso setting. So she made herself and espresso and I was left without a cup of coffee. I was actually pretty disappointed. But she felt bad for me, so she made me a pot of coffee just for myself. It was quite good. She said that she was following the steps that someone suggested here on coffeegeek. We played a boardgame while I drank my drink and she commented about how strange it was to see me drinking a cup of coffee.

That caffeine withdrawal is no joke!  I remember for about a week straight i would be getting the worst headaches and could not figure out why?  Here come to find out my wife in one of her "this is good for you moves" decided to change my coffee to decaf with out me knowing.  (before i started roasting my own) < she started me doing that too but thats another story

She did the same thing to her sister we were both ticked off at her,  Do you think the ex-lax frosting on the cup cake will be a "this is good for you" revenge?

Ha! Similar story. Several years ago several of the family camped together. An aunt made a couple of thermos' of coffee for us in the morning for a day trip. By noon about 3 of us were nearly sick from the headache. When we got back ot camp we asked for coffee and as she was making it I spotted the decaf can...

Glad you've found how good coffee can be, now continue the explorations, there's no end....
