The numbers just don't add up.

I can not believe that there are people willing to scurry on their hands and knees through the forest in hopes of finding a brown - some what digested -bean. Coffee beans are very small.  Forest floors are very brown with leaves etc. and they are quite dark.  I just can't believe the Kopi Luwak story at all.

When I see the correct civet eating any coffee, I may change my mind. I had heard they were all caged animals., btw. but think of the paragrapgh above if they are not caged.

My animal science professor friend discussed how cats chew- they don't swallow whole.  (My own cat just brought a bird in:( and is chewing on it as I type.Darn)

I think the Kopi Luwak story is just that.  Some smart marketeer years ago made up the idea after too many non-coffee drinks:).

Just my $.02

aloha,
cea

Dear Craig,

You are right I have seen that picture before but what stops me is...that isn't a coffee branch, and there are no coffee cherries in the photo.

IMHO It looks to me, just like a cute animal with nothing else related to coffee.

I received a 2 ounce package of "civet coffee" a while back as a birthday present.

About two weeks ago at a neighbors house party I convinced several people to try a cup.
I passed the package around for everyone to read about what they were drinking.  Of course
all the comments one could imagine were made.  I had a good time with it.
And the taste of the coffee??
Most everyone thought it was good to really good, like bold yet smooth.
Worth the cost?   No, of course not.

Heard about this one long ago but just now stumbled upon it again.

The economy of the section of Morocco around Tiout is dependent on a renowned cooking oil made from nuts of the argan tree, but only nuts that have been eaten and excreted by goats (that actually climb into the trees and stand on branches to eat the nut-bearing fruit). According to an October New York Times dispatch, locals are trying to shift gradually from predigested nuts without spoiling the oil's taste. Tried it with dogs? Kopi Pug?

Uh, nope, not me.

$300 a pound for some Mr. Hanky Extra Bold is where I draw the line.

And just wait until the folks at Sanka or Tasters Choice figure out how to freeze-dry decaf poop coffee.

OK I am newbie to Coffee Geekdom so a bit late to the discussion.
I have drunk genuine CivetButt coffee in Bali. Actually it was in the Orchid Garden in Despensar. The Civet only exists in the wild on the western
national park area. The reason it costs a lot is that humans have to collect the droppings. They are not digested as such but pass thru the digestive system. The civet picks out the best beans. The coffee bean is red so reasonably easy to spot on the forest floor. It still has to be roasted and ground in the usual way. The civet I saw was ruddy colour about the size of a fox. Some are kept in cages but that defeats the whole object. Like herbs collected in the wild cost more than farmed ones. Same thing.
The coffee itself is really good. It has a basic Javaness but is very gesthalt, well rounded and complete. Not too chocolately and leaning towards nutty. Powerful caffeine hit, very satisfying and smooth. I drank it black. Also had some Orchid Honey at the same cafe which was out of this world.
I am pretty sure some of the other coffees we drink have some natural products on them from birds and wild animals before they are processed, so whats the difference.?

Around $260-290 a pound difference.
